The First Annual San Diego Bike Union Fall Haul-In and Picnic was rained out back on October 17th, so they’re giving it another try this Sunday. SDBikeCommuter’s DownTownies weekly social ride will be departing at 1:00pm from Velo Cult Bike Shop @ 2220 Fern Street and riding to the event at Trolley Barn Park, and welcome anyone to ride with them. Now, when I say ‘court’ what I actually mean is “any flat concrete or asphalt surface approximately the size of a basketball court or roller hockey rink with lights”. Of course a real, permanent court would be awesome and is ultimately what we are aiming for, but at this point it would just be nice to find a place to play where we won’t be hassled every few weeks or months.

So, it’s back to the drawing board for SDBP…we remain lost souls wandering the streets. We still have a few ideas and are trying to work with the Parks Dept. so hopefully something will come through. However, if anyone has ANY suggestions or hook-ups for some space to play, please contact us ASAP!

The San Diego Bike Union is hosting our first annual Fall Haul-In and Picnic at Trolley Barn Park in University Heights on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17TH @ 2:00pm.

Bring a picnic and lawn games, bring the kids, invite the neighbors!

The idea is to use your bike to transport everything to the park–we’re talking baskets, panniers, racks, backpacks, messenger bags, Xtracycles, cargo bikes, trailers, whatever you have that will turn your bike into a hauling machine–no cars needed!

San Diego Bike Polo will be on hand to give a demonstration and let people try the sport for themselves.

We’ll also have representatives from the bike kitchen Bikes del Pueblo to answer some basic technical and repair questions.

I can’t tell you what the hardest button to button is, the first or the last. Yet I am standing there, trying to put an ever-so-Mr.-Rogers-esque cardigan on someone who is really more Levi’s jean jacket with the cut-out concert t-shirt sewn on the back, and the seams purposely frayed. Sure, the sweater fits, but both of us know, about 6 layers below the “good intention” strata of social interaction, that it’s not gonna to work. But somehow, I’m buttoning up the front of that cardigan, smiling, figuring it’s gonna work.

You do the same thing. You know you do. It’s like buying your significant other/spouse/family member/best friend/coworker clothing for a holiday gift. They’d sooner be seen wearing a ballet leotard in the arctic than donning what you’ve chosen. No matter what the label says, one size may fit all, but fitting, and fitting are two completely different things.

It’s riding. And it happens. Someone, probably someone you know and respect, or like, or generally tolerate, or someone you have to work with, asks you about riding to work, or riding in general. There you are, post-commute coitus, and smelling a little like a tube sock left in the back of a locker. You’re floating, the world is happy and you’ve no complaints. Even work seems like a good idea. And then it happens, you get one of the standard questions: Is it hard? How far do you have to ride? Isn’t it dangerous? And perhaps the most bating, loaded statement ever: I have a bike I used to ride…

Come out and play one last time before some of the guys head up to San Francisco this weekend for the Halloween Ball Whackers Ball II
